Soap Commander Love is a very nice rose-fragranced shaving soap, designed to replicate the now-discontinued Klar Kabinett. I easily got a great lather with the Maggard 24mm brush shown, and today I used the Rockwell Model T by itself. I tried it at 6 and at 5, both of which had a lot of blade feel but gave no nicks. On the whole, though, I prefer a lower setting, and I finished with a setting of 1.
I can see that one might well alter the adjustment of this razor by pass, since it’s simply a matter of twisting the dial, unlike the Gillette adjustables (Fat Boy, Slim Handle, and Super Adjustable), which generally require opening the doors a bit in order to change the adjustment. The Model T also offers a continuous range of adjustment, whereas the Gillettes have a step-wise adjustment defined by the click settings. In this way, the Model T’s adjustment capabilities are more like those of the Merkur Progress, so tomorrow I’ll try shaving with both to compare.
Not to natter on about the handle, but something about it doesn’t feel quite right to me: the unknurled section seems too long, and the open/close knob is also too long, to the point where it feels like a stubby sort of handle beneath the unknurled section. I would have a shorter smooth section and a shorter adjustment knob, and make it more knob-like in having a slightly greater diameter than the handle. I also feel as though the diameter of the smooth section is a tiny bit too small compared to the rest of the handle.
I don’t know why the handle feel stands out so much for me—perhaps it’s because the razor itself, in terms of shaving, is comfortable, so I notice the handle more. Still, the current design doesn’t feel quite right to me.
Very smooth result, with no nicks or burn. A good splash of Thayers Rose-Petal Witch Hazel with aloe vera, and the week is drawing to a close.
