Starting the week with a slant

SOTD 2016-04-11

An exceptionally smooth and close shave this morning, as it typical of Monday mornings: a two-day stubble wiped away with ease, thanks to the cutting action of a slant razor. You might find of interest this report of the first use of a slant by a man whose previous experience was only with the Merkur 34C HD, the slant in his case being the iKon Shavecraft 102.

First, of course, the prep. As the Plissoft-style synthetics have gained in popularity, some now sneer at the Omega S-Brush synthetics, but I find that the quality of the regular size (not the pro size, which are too stiff and spring) is unchanged and still as it was before the Plissoft, when the S-Brush was found to be quite good. Like the Plissoft, it’s a soft and yielding brush but with good resilience. It makes lather like a champ and it feels good on the face—and many models cost less (sometimes substantially less) than a Plissoft brush (especially those made by Plisson).

I easily worked up a fine lather from Maggard’s Chai Tea shaving soap, and I enjoyed the feel of the brush as I worked up the lather on my face. Today I used the Merkur white bakelite slant shown, which is (for me) an exceptionally good slant. Three passes, no problems, and a perfectly smooth result.

A good splash of Saint Charles Shave’s Dark Rose, and I’m ready for a new week. Today’s cookery: an Atkins meatloaf recipe made into mini-loaves and also Nigella Lawson’s tarragon chicken, with the spatchcocked chicken marinated overnight with lemon juice and zest, olive oil, and tarragon, both made with an eye to leftovers.
