Okay, I was seduced by the new Dr. Jon formula and had to try it out—but no net increase in nuber of soaps since I passed along the Vol 1 Savannah Sunrise when I ordered Vol 2. The doctor’s comment on Vol 2:
We wanted to transition from making a high quality vegan shaving soap to making the absolute best vegan shaving soap available and after months of testing we finally settled on a new ingredient list and method of production that we felt was worth making the transition. The addition of slippery elm bark, aloe, soy wax, jojoba oil and sunflower oil allows us to make an amazingly slick soap that leaves your face feeling soft and so moisturized it you don’t need any post shave treatment.
The full ingredients list for this soap:
Stearic Acid, Water, Castor Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Shea Butter, Mango Butter, Babassu Oil, Essential/Fragrance Oils, Sodium Hydroxide, Sunflower Oil, Avocado Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Meadowfoam Oil, Aloe Vera, Soy Wax, Slippery Elm Bark, Citric Acid.
I used the 24mm Maggard brush shown, and the lather was quite good (and reassuringly white). I’m not sure that in one shave I noticed the additional slickness, but I’ll watch for it as I gain experience with the soap. I believe I have still the Vol 1 Propaganda, so I can compare.
Shawn in a comment on yesterday’s SOTD asked: “Michael, have you ever tried a hybrid/mix of iKon X3 Slant with iKon DLC Slant? I am told the base plates and caps are interchangeable. I only own the DLC.” So I decided to give it a try. I do find that for me the iKon stainless slant (whether plain or DLC coated) is more nick-prone than the X3, so I went with using the DLC cap on the X3 baseplate, since I think the difference would be mainly in the baseplate. The two-tone effect reminds me of Delta Echo’s razor treatments.
The shave was quite good. I was surprised to see an Astra Superior Platinum blade in the X3—I usually use Personna Lab Blue in that razor—but it worked fine: no nicks and an easy shave. Next, of course, is to try the X3 cap with the DLC baseplate—maybe tomorrow.
A good splash of Savannah Sunrise aftershave, and the job is done, somewhat later than usual.
