The weekend shave: Lea shaving cream and the Maggard V2OC

A boar-bristle shaving brush with an attractive aluminum handle next to an aluminum tin of Lea shaving cream. Next to that issa rectangular glass bottle of aftershave with a silver cap. In front, lying on its side, is a DE razor with a stainless-steel handle.

This morning I was struck by the realization that I get only one shave for the weekend — I realize that is by choice and habit, not necessity — so I should pay more attention to my choices. The realization had ex post facto, during the shave, but luckily I had made good choices already.

The Antica Barbieria boar brush is a good brush, and I plan to use it often for a while to see whether breaking it in will bring it to the level of quality of the Omega Pro 48 — and, as I say, it’s already good. It took up some Lea shaving cream readily and produced a rich, slick lather.

The V2 open-comb head from Maggard Razors, here on their MR7 stainless-steel handle, is a lovely razor. It’s a clone of a Parker open-comb head, so that also is good. However, at the time the stainless-steel handle options from Maggard were better than what Parker offered — at the same total price for the razor. The razor is comfortable and efficient and today easily produced a BBS result in three passes (assisted, of course, by the excellent prep, which included Grooming Dept Moisturizing Pre-Shave in addition to Lea shaving cream).

A splash of Mr. Taylor’s, a Gentleman’s Aftershave Lotion, and the weekend is launched.

The tea this morning is Murchie’s Hatley Castle Blend: “Black tea, green tea (including Jasmine).” (Sometimes Murchie’s falls flat in their descriptions of their teas, but Hatley Castle is pretty good.)
