A silvertip badger brush with a whitel handle on which is printed in fine black letters 'The "Duke"' stands net to a tub of shaving soap on its side. The label has an intricate wallpaper-like pattern in tan and cream, and printed in the center in black is the Spade symbol for a playing card, a horizontal line beneath it, and below that the numeral "8". In front is a stainless steel razor with a ribbed handle lying on its side. At the right is a brown glass bottle with a black cap and the same label as the shaving soap.
The Duke, with Aces over Eights and the Mamba

A fine weekday shave. I do like 345 Soap Co.’s formula —

Stearic Acid, Beef Tallow, Milks of Donkey, Camel, & Goat, Shea butter, Coconut oil, Palm oil, Potassium hydroxide, Distilled water, Castor oil, Sodium hydroxide, Glycerin, Grapeseed oil, Cocoa butter, Yogurt, Jojoba oil, Capuaca butter, Murumuru butter, Kokum butter, Panthenol, Allantoin, Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, Fragrance.

And Aces over Eights has an alluring fragrance: “Tobacco, Mint, Rose, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Cedar, Patchouli, Vetiver, Tonka bean.”

With The Duke from Simpson, I got quite a nice lather, and my RazoRock Mamba did a good job but with a little work, so after the shave, I changed the blade. I noted that this razor has the alignment studs on the baseplate, and they fit into sockets in the cap.

I won’t continually repeat that I use the third-pass trick — squeezing out all the lather from the knot before the third pass and applying it to my rinsed face by hand, then letting it sit while I clean the brush before executing the third pass — but I will make a final comment: one of the nicest things about the technique is that it makes cleaning the brush such a snap.

The overall result was a pleasurable, close shave. A splash of Aces over Eights aftershave and the day is launched.

The tea this morning is Murchie’s CBC Radio Blend: “A blend of choice Ceylon and China black teas, Jasmine, and other green teas with a touch of citrus.”
