First shave with Tiki Bar shaving soap

SOTD 16 June 2014

I just got one of the Tiki Bar shaving soaps, thanks to neighbortim’s recommendation in a comment, and I want to thank him. It’s a terrific shaving soap, and you can see the list of ingredients (in their saponified identities): tallow, cocoa butter, castor oil, and kokum butter. It’s heaving on potassium than sodium, it seems, and as a result, the soap is a softer soap. (Soapmakers, please feel free to correct my impressions.) It’s about the consistency of window putty or soft clay, so easy to mash into the tub. (You can also buy the puck alone or with a tin as the container.)

Tiki Bar also offers a sampler of their soaps and has a vegan option as well (which I’ve now ordered). The fragrance of this one for some reason struck me as resembling salt-water taffy, but the fragrance is light. I’ve ordered a couple more fragrances, and I hope they’ll extend the range to include rose, lavender, and other traditional fragrances.

In any event, the lather is instant, thick, and creamy—no struggle with this one. My Rooney is quite a good brush, but I think any brush would love this soap. And three passes of the Stealth over a two-day stubble left my face BBS.

A good splash of Krampert’s Finest bay rum, and the week is underway.
