The Merkur white bakelite slant from the 1930’s is indeed one of the very best slants I own: it always provides a flawless shave, never nicks, and the light weight is a pleasure once you dial in to it: you can reaily apply only as much pressure as the shave requires.
Of course, part of the credit for its sterling performance must go to the blade—a Personna Lab Blue—and to the prep. I used the HJM synthetic—quite similar in feel to the new Omega S-series synthetics—and i Coloniali shaving cream. I had an i Coloniali soap, but I did realize it was one that required adding small driblets of water as the brush was loaded—i.e., a thirsty soap—so I had difficulties with lather collapse. Now I want to try it again.
Three passes, flawless BBS result, and a good splash of Stetson’s classic aftershave.
