Brushguy brush, Dr. Jon’s, and the Mongoose Razor: Perfect result

SOTD 1 June 2015

I normally use a slant on Monday (two-day stubble is fun to shave), but I wanted to try the Mongoose on a heavier growth.

Brushguy.com makes very nice brushes, as you see: a comfortable handle in a variety of colors, and knots of the more compact sort—think Simpson Chubby 1 or Duke 3: like that. And they are very pleasant to use. My general preference is for a longer loft and bit fluffier knot, but this morning I for some reason got particular pleasure from using the Brushguy silvertip. In part that was due the excellent Dr. Jon’s, and again you see the fragrances listed around the lid’s circumference—a nice idea.

With a good lather, and having taken my time lathering before the first pass (because I was enjoying it so much), I set to work with the Mongoose. A razor that cuts by compressive force—that is, razors other than the slant—seem to cut more readily with a massive head. I noted that in several of the iKons, especially the S3S. It certainly seemed true of the Mongoose, definitely not a lightweight: the blade slid through the stubble with effortlessly.

There was some roughness detectable after the first pass, as is always the case, but by the end of the second pass most of my face was BBS or close to it. The final pass, ATG, was mere polish and the final result was a perfectly smooth face with no nicks and no burn.

I still noted an impulse to flip the razor at certain points, and there is definitely more rinsing required. But overall, the Mongoose would make a very nice daily razor. If you’re interested, the best way to contact them is through their Facebook page. You can also email them at mongooseorders@gmail.com.

A good splash of ProspectorCo.com’s K.C. Atwood witch-hazel-based aftershave, and the week is launched.
