Great shave to start the week: Merkur 37G and Vintage Blades own soap

SOTD 20 July 2015

An extremely good shave this morning. Some years back Vintage Blades LLC contracted with an English soapmaker (before the recent round of reformulations) for a private-label triple-milled traditional English shaving soap with a traditional lavender fragrance. That’s the soap and it makes an absolutely terrific lather, today using the Omega S-Brush shown.

I picked the 37G to remind myself of what a very good razor it is. (I don’t know whether this gold version of the Merkur slant is still available—but it’s the same as the 37C save for color.) While the newer slants may be a tad more comfortable, the 37C/G is by no means uncomfortable, and it is as efficient as any of the slants: they’re all terrific with respect to efficiency. And the 37C has the advantage of being relatively low priced compared to the others: around $45. (You can sometimes get an iKon #102 blemished head for $40—and everyone reports that the blemish, if any, is barely detectable—but that requires have a reasonably hefty handle to use with it.)

Three passes, perfect finish, no nicks, and a good splash of Stetson Sierra to launch the week.
