A perfect shave with contributing factors explained

SOTD 10 June 2013

A perfect shave today, and one contributing factor is certainly the two-day stubble: no shave yesterday. More stubble seems to result in a smoother finish.

Another factor: the Jlocke98 pre-shave beard wash described in the previous post. I did indeed go with the 8:1 Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap:lanolin oil recipe. (Dr. Bronner’s Lavender, but the fragrance is overwhelmed by the lanolin.) 8:1 seems to be a good ratio, though I may tinker a bit: 2 tsp instead of 1.5 tsp would give a 6:1 ratio with 1/4 (US) cup of Dr. Bronner’s.

I know, I know: you’re all thinking, “Well, that’s well and good, Leisureguy, but how about with emu oil instead of lanolin oil?” Yes, yes. I know. I’m making an emu oil version as soon as I can buy some more little containers.

I got a good lather from the Green Mountain Spiced Rum shaving soap—light fragrance, as seems to be the rule. The Frank Shaving synthetic brush is quite good: not quite so soft as HJM but perhaps a little more resilient. I prefer the HJM, but that is merely personal preference: both will do a good job.

Another contributing factor is, of course, the use of a slant-bar razor. I used my Merkur 37G since the 37C is still in current production and would be the slant you’d buy if you bought one today. (The 39C is also available, but I prefer the 37C. They both have the same head.) A previously used Gillette 7 O’Clock SharpEdge blade did the cutting, which went very well.

A big splash of Klar Seifen Klassik to finish the shave, and the week begins. It should be quite an interesting week. James Clapper is all over the news making statements, many of which are doubtless lies, which he has no trouble telling. I wonder why they even bother to interview him: the information he provides is clearly unreliable. One odd thing I’ve noticed: in the news stories where he is interviewed, he is never asked about this lie, nor why we should trust him at all.
