Autumn seems to have arrived 9 days early. Yesterday was cold and brought a heavy downpour. No more short-sleeved shirts, for sure. So I brought out the Icarus formula Darkfall from Declaration Grooming and created a great lather with the Maggard 22mm synthetic shown.
The razor is RazoRock’s take (and improvement) on the Edwin Jagger: the MJ90-A. You can read details at the link, but one I will point out:
4) Longevity: The DE89 is well known for its threaded post snapping off. Why? Because it uses cheap pot metal and because it’s post is spot welded on. Drop it from 12-18 inches and the post breaks off into the handle rendering your $40-45 razor useless and ready for the landfill. We completely milled the top cap from a block of aircraft aluminum, meaning the top cap is one solid piece, no broken posts here!
The MJ90-A has “A” for adjustable, but I don’t really see that—I suppose it means loosening the head a bit, but that’s risky in a three-piece razor; that technique is normally found in two-piece razors (e.g., the Merkur Progress, the Parker Variant, the Dorco PL602). And I don’t see that it needs adjustment: it’s perfectly comfortable and efficient as it is.
I continue my blade test with the second shave on the blade, and it was another good shave, though perhaps not quite so smooth as with some other brands. It didn’t seem to cut quite so easily. Tomorrow will be interesting.
But still: with three passes I easily got a smooth finish with no harm done, and a small splash of The Shave Den’s Patchouli-Rose aftershave finished the job and started the day.
And the blood glucose spike was a one-off. Today back to normal. But I will be avoiding all refined carbohydrates.
