Today I use another Grooming Dept shaving soap that I found, not on his site, but at a stockist. And West Coast Shaving had not only the soap but also the matching aftershave.
Today’s soap uses (as did yesterday’s) Grooming Dept’s Donkeymilk formula, of which WCS notes:
Mohammad’s donkey-milk recipe is stuffed full of skin-loving, great lathering ingredients. Lamb tallow and duck fat are joined with butters and milks, like illipe, cupuaçu, donkey, tucuma. In addition, there are scads of other moisturizing products like castor oil, daikon seed extract, linoleic acid, camellia seed oil, tamanu oil, carnauba wax, xylitol, and the list goes on.
The fragrance notes are “honey, rose, amber, orris, myrrh, oakmoss, vanilla, benzoin, musk, and patchouli,” and WCS comments:
The amber rose aroma is a winning combination. The honey and rose give a rich, decadent start but it is kept from being cloying with the amber, orris, and myrrh. All this is laid on a base of oakmoss, vanilla, benzoin, musk, and patchouli.
I do indeed like the fragrance very much, and the lather, worked up this morning with my butterscotch Rooney Victorian, is divine. Donkeymilk soaps are thirsty, but the lather they produce is outstanding.
RazoRock’s Old Type looks like a run-of-the-mill razor, but its performance is spectacular. It feels on the face quite ordinary — a typical little non-threatening razor, meekly going about its business. But its bland, Milquetoast manner hides a ruthless efficiency that, after three pleasant, comfortable passes, has removed every living trace of stubble.
My face’s smoothness now, after Donkeymilk lather and Old Type have done their turn, rivals the post-shave feel when my best slant has whisked away a stand of two-day stubble. Give this razor a go. If you don’t want to spring for the razor ($20), you can get just the head ($8) and use a handle of your own.
I was delighted to see that West Coasting Shaving offers Grooming Dept aftershaves. I don’t feel that this aftershave needs any Aion Hydrating Gel. The aftershave contains no alcohol and, for a splash, is slightly thick. Its fragrance — the same Amber Rose — is a delight and its effect on the skin is wonderful. This is a great aftershave.
An outstanding shaving with which to end the week. And do check out Grooming Dept stockists for products you won’t find available on the Grooming Dept site itself — for example, right now West Coast Shaving has these.
The tea this morning is Murchie’s Jasmine Downy Pearls: “Long leaves of spring-picked green tea are scented with jasmine blossoms and then meticulously rolled into compact pearls. As they steep, these pearls unravel and produce a mellow honey-and-jasmine flavour.”
