A wonderful shave with the Superslant L2++

A small silvertip shaving brush with a black octagonal handle sites next to a tub of shaving soap that shows a purple spacesuit helmet against a yellow background and through the transparent faceplate we see a beet swimming in a brown liquid, presumably coffee since the helmet is labeled "Planet Java Hive." Next to the soap is a rectangular transparent glass bottle with a black cap and the same label. In front, lying on its side, is a slant razor.

I always look forward to Monday morning because I shave a two-day stubble using a slant. This morning I picked a pleasurable soap, Phoenix Artisan’s Planet Java Hive, here in CK-6. This soap has a wonderful wake-up fragrance, and the lather of course is superb, here made with a Whipped Dog silvertip in 22mm.

The razor is RazoRock’s Superslant, which I’ve previously praised, but that was with the L1++ baseplate that I originally purchased. I became curious enough to buy the L2++ baseplate to see what a greater blade gap would do — and now I know. Both the L1++ and L2++ are highly efficient, and both are very comfortable, but for me the L1++ is the more comfortable. I — naturally enough — get more blade feel with the L2++, and though it is not uncomfortable per see, I prefer the gentler feel of the L1++. This is still a magnificent slant.

Three passes produced perfect smoothness, and a splash of Planet Java Hive aftershave/cologne carried the fragrance forward. I did augment the splash with a couple of squirts of Grooming Dept’s Aion Hydrating Gel.

The tea this morning is Mariage Frères Sakura Blue: “The new SAKURA BLUE® JARDIN PREMIER label is a fabulous blue tea with the scent of cherry blossom.” As I’ve mentioned previously, “blue tea” is the trademarked name Mariagre Frères uses for Oolong teas.

Blue tea™ represents a half-way stage between green and black tea. The leaves undergo a brief oxidation. Blue tea™ is also called Oolong which means “black dragon”, and occasionally Bohea (or Bohe or even Bou) which is a deformation of Wu Yi, the name of the famous mountain in China’s Fujian Province where the most highly esteemed blue tea is made.
