The HJM is another excellent synthetic brush available at a modest price. I have the first version, which is even softer and fluffier than the current version. I was moved to bring it out after using the black Satin Tip, and I’m glad I did. It quickly worked up an excellent lather from the Mennen shave stick, and then I picked up my Phoenix Artisan Double-Comb razor. I was moved to use it after seeing someone praise it on Wicked Edge—mine had migrated way over to the right of the shelf and sort of dropped out of mind, but after this morning, I’m moving it back to the middle.
My deciding to give the razor more use is not simply because of the excellent result—a very easy BBS this morning—but also because of the pleasure of using it. The comb-cap design really does work, IMO: the razor glides easily over the skin, more lubricated because more lather escapes through the comb. In addition, the knurling on the handle is a particularly good design. It lacks of sharp points of an agressively knurled diamond patter, but offers a totally crisp and secure grip. At $35, this razor is (IMO) a bargain, besides being somewhat unusual in the double-open-comb department (the original reason I bought it). I had not expected it to be so good.
A good splash of Booster Oriental Spice, and the day is launched.
